The Ancient Breed.
Inuit Dogs are one of the oldest dog breeds in the world. A good conservative guess would say the breed is about 8,000 years old. Many experts say they have been around longer. Inuit Dogs can trace their ancient lineage across the circumpolar world, from Siberia to Greenland.
Inuit Dogs are the closest breed of dogs to wolves. Inuit Dogs trace their lineage to Gray Wolves.
Inuit Dogs come in 2 flavors ...... Canadian Eskimo Dogs (CED) and Greenland Dogs. The dogs are genetically identical, with a few minor differences. The CED's come from Canada and are usually smaller in height and huskier in build. Their Greenlandic counterpart is usually taller and more streamlined. Most of their differences are attributed to diet and environmental happenings.
Inuit Dogs are very loving dogs. They are smart, bold and protective of their owners. They do not make good guard or protection dogs. Inuit Dogs are loyal to their pack, and they don't necessarily care for outsiders. Inuit Dogs are excellent hunters. In fact, today they are still used by the Inuit of Canada and Greenland for hunting, fishing, traveling and everyday life.
Inuit Dogs are truly the only dogs that live with the pack mentality. In a pack you have a "Boss Dog". The "Boss" can be male or female and they rule the entire pack. Under the "Boss" you have an "Alpha Male" and an "Alpha Female". These Dogs take care of their respective genders. If allowed, Inuit Dogs will fight almost every day to figure out who holds what position in the pack. In our kennel, we believe Desna to be the current "Boss". He is a large White Greenland Dog that is the father or uncle to several of our dogs. We believe our "Alpha Male" to be Miska or Takaani. They are brothers and sons of Desna. Our "Alpha Female" we believe to be Ilanaaq from Qaanaaq, Greenland. She could be the "Boss Dog" if she wanted. She is known to occasionally take on several dogs by herself.
Inuit Dogs do not have blue eyes. If they are purebred dogs as we believe our dogs to be, they will not have blue eyes. This is a designer trait that was bred into many Spitz or "Husky Type" dogs. Inuit Dogs come in many colors. White is overall the most prevalent color.
Male Inuit Dogs usually weigh somewhere between 65 and 90 pounds with females coming in 10 to 20 pounds lighter. Of course, you will always find Inuit dogs that are smaller or larger than this. Female Inuit Dogs usually have litters of 1-8 puppies.
